Aquarius Board Game in Action (Board Game Reviews)

Rating: ★★★★☆

Are you a Hippy, do you have long hair, do you wish it was still the sixties, if the answer is yes you will love Aquarius where the player with the longest hair goes first!

The goal is simple in Aquarius get a chain of cards interconnecting with the same symbol to win, think Dominos but only a bit more psychedelic, each player has a secret Goal which is one of five Elements FIRE, WATER, AIR, EARTH and ETHER and during their turn draws and then plays a card. Most cards in the deck are Element cards depicting one or more of the Elements divided into panels, you must then place the card on the table so one of its Element Panels will match up with a card already in play on the table, once you have 7 cards of your secret goal interconnecting you win. To spice things up you can also draw special action cards like Trades Goals were you swap you secret Goal for another players or Move a Card were you would remove a card from the table and add it to your hand.

This game sounds simple but can be quite tactical as you Bluff and counter Bluff over swapped Goals and blocking your opponents routes, the game is can become a battle of wills and concentration with 2 players but is best with 4 or more and winning is highly satisfying especially when you steal a opponents victory by Trading Goals with him.

This is a great game to introduce to Non-Gamers especially Family and children who love the bright colours of the cards, but there is also depth for the experienced Gamer, the only downside is that some people may be put off by how New Age the cards look as at a distant they look a little like Tarot cards and maybe a future version of this game would consider ditching the Elements and maybe replacing them with other symbols like animals to reach a higher audience as this game deserves all in all I would give this game 8 out of 10.

The game is published by Looney Labs, famous for their off beat card and strange Pyramid games if you like Aquarius also try Flux.
